Universal Design for Learning: Instructional Practices to Support Success for All Learners

Description:
The goal of this session is provide an overview of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and identify tangible strategies Adult Basic Education teachers and administrators can use to increase engagement, access and success for learners in their classrooms. Participants will have time to ask questions, share ideas, and access seven newly released resources they can use to bring the learning back to their classrooms and teams.

Facilitator:
Dr. Amanda Bastoni is a research scientist at CAST. During her 20+ years in education as a researcher, teacher and Career and Technical Education (CTE) director, Amanda has focused on increasing equity and access for special populations in CTE. Specifically, she sought to use UDL to increase pathways for English Language Learners and females interested in exploring STEM careers. Most recently Amanda has been working with agencies and organizations to remove barriers and utilize local assets to increase access to STEM for rural populations.

(.5) 3:00pm– 3:30pm: Understanding Universal Design
In this section we will review key elements of universal design, its application in educational settings particularly for adult learners.  The presenter(s) will review important strategies around universal design as well as andragogical and pedagogical elements.

(.5) 3:30pm-4:00pm: Curriculum Alignment
The presenter(s) will review curriculum resources around major publishing tools and their alignment to universal design. In addition, the presenter will review several instructional strategies for implementation best practices relative to adult learners. Participants will walk away with a comprehensive list and correlated instructional support tools and strategies.

(.25) 4:00pm-4:15pm: Practical Application
Attendees will discuss the practical application of these strategies in their own educational and instructional settings in small groups.
